Letter: Departing Government Employees Deserve Respect, Not Criticism | Opinion

[ad_1]

To the editor – Your editorial on Wednesday criticizing two state employees for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine is flawed on several points. The “rules” that employees broke were imposed after they were hired, and they never accepted them. In fact, the public did not agree with them; they were imposed by decree.

More importantly, the employees did not break the rules. They knew what would happen when they broke them and accepted it. To draw a parallel between a dress code and a vaccination is just ludicrous. There is a big difference between putting something on your body and putting something on it.

You claim that these employees were not opposed to the vaccine for health reasons, but for political reasons. A red herring if there is one. Are you saying they would agree to be vaccinated if a Republican governor mandated them? If so, where is the proof?

In other circumstances, one might admire these two for having the courage of their convictions. After all, their freedom to refuse vaccination is the same freedom that allows all of us to make unpopular choices. We may have to pay for them, but it is just simply unfair to be questioned and blamed for them.
