Corporate taxes won’t go up, and guess who is entirely to blame?

High taxes and high rates of union membership are what make this country great. And I don’t remember a lack of innovation between 1942 and 1964 because the high tax rates made budding entrepreneurs want to create. Quite the contrary: it was the time when almost all important inventions and innovations were made in the United States.

So it’s a good thing Democrats want to tax billionaires. But there is a lot more work to be done here. On the one hand, the party must elect more Liberals. If there were 52 Democratic senators, including, say, Sarah Gideon from Maine and Cal Cunningham from North Carolina, Sinema wouldn’t matter. Not that Gideon and Cunningham were fire-breathing Liberals, but as freshman Senators they would have been more loyal soldiers than Sinema. The party could pass something without caring at all about Manchin and Sinema, with Gideon and Cunningham as yes and Vice President Harris providing the 51st vote.

More importantly, there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of re-educating the public on taxes. The truth is, Americans, all Americans, are taxed relatively low. The Tax Foundation in 2019 ranked the United States 32nd out of 41 countries for overall taxation. Democrats really need to stress this reality. But if that is politically impossible, they should at least unite to demand that the richest 2% (we’re talking about people who make around $ 400,000 a year or more) do their part. That they are not currently is not “the fault of the Democrats”. Between the Senate and the House, there are perhaps five or more Democrats hampering the effort. Electing more Democrats will make the handful of obstructionists irrelevant.
