NORTH PORT, Fla. (WWSB / WINK) – Lawyer for Brian Laundrie’s family says errors made by North Port Police in their investigation into his disappearance and death have sparked a slew of false allegations against his clients.
“… You can’t blame the family because the police didn’t know enough to follow someone they were obviously watching,” Steven Bertolino told ABC7 in a text message Tuesday.
Bertolino responded to North Port Police reports detailing the surveillance operation which led them to believe they knew Brian’s whereabouts in the weeks following Gabrielle Petito’s disappearance and death.
Bertolino referred to an interview with North Port Police spokesman Josh Taylor through WINK News in which he said Brian Laundrie’s surveillance had been flawed – at one point investigators believed Brian had left home in his Ford Mustang. Taylor says they now believe the person who left the house was Roberta Laundrie, Brian’s mother.
Taylor noted that the pair were “built the same way.” Bertolino rejected this explanation.
“Everyone makes mistakes,” he wrote to ABC7. “But Brian and Roberta aren’t ‘built’ the same. Also, it was NPPD who put the ticket on the Mustang at the park and if they saw Brian leaving in the Mustang on Monday, which is new to me, then they should have looked at the Mustang and the park from Monday. and they would have. I knew it was Chris and Roberta who had picked up the Mustang from the park. To be clear, none of this may have made a difference in Brian’s life, but it certainly would have prevented all the false accusations made by so many against Chris and Roberta about “hiding” Brian or to finance an “escape” otherwise. . ‘ In the end, the LE researchers did their best to locate Brian and their efforts are appreciated.
Bertolino went on to say, “I agree with Mr. Taylor that Brian may have already passed away when the NPPD realized they had ‘lost track’. However, you can’t blame the family because the police didn’t know enough to follow someone they were obviously watching. This is a tragedy for two families and any mistakes made by anyone or any entity involved should be recognized and used to train or educate others so that mistakes are not repeated.
Laundrie’s family reported him missing on September 17, claiming he went to the Carlton Preserve for a hike on September 13. The FBI must belong to Brian.
ABC7 has reached out to Josh Taylor for comment, but he is currently out of town.
