A restaurant owner said boycotting bars and nightclubs during a drinking protest made them bear the blame.
Zoe Ellis, owner of The Palm Restaurant & Eateries on Watergate Street in Chester, said she “appreciates the sentiment” behind the nationwide campaign, which has seen people across the UK boycott bars and clubs to take a stand against alcohol consumption.
But she said it makes it look like they’re responsible for “these terrible events” and puts pressure on an already struggling industry, reports CheshireLive.
Instead, the focus should be more on prevention through an increased police presence, Zoe said.

Speaking about the national Girls Night In campaign, Zoe said, “I can totally appreciate the sentiment behind the national Girls Night In campaign; however, I think the bar / club boycott gives the impression that we are responsible and the cause of these terrible events.
“I think prevention is essential to help tackle this problem, but there still needs to be police intervention and this needs to be increased if the problem gets worse.

“Firstly, regarding the boycott, I have a feeling that as an industry we are already in trouble and although some might not think that asking a bar / club to close for a night or to keep quiet is a problem; for us it is a huge thing.
“It’s the difference between someone who gets a shift that week or maybe has enough money in their paycheck at the end of the month after almost two years of intermittent work and partial payment. via leave.
“Right now, every hour of trading and every customer makes a difference and counts. That’s why I come back to the fact that prevention and customer protection from bar owners and managers is essential to avoid future boycotts.

“Prevention takes many forms, as noted above, but the reason for the police liaison on this is simple; we are dealing with criminals.
“People who buy and sell drugs as well as people who could potentially be sex offenders / abusers. Failure to consider working with the police on this issue puts all the blame on the front desk staff.
“This is something that I do not agree with and I think we need to change when we look at how we are working together to tackle this problem.”
It comes after a protest march took place in Manchester last night in support of the national boycott.
Hundreds of people gathered in front of the central library in St. Peter’s Square to hear speakers, counselors and victims of alcohol consumption.
As part of the boycott, some nightclubs closed last night out of solidarity, including 42’s and The Venue.
