The Boston Celtics have been kind of a disappointment as a team so far this season, dropping both tougher games to teams like the New York Knicks on the road, but also clubs they should. beat at home like the Toronto Raptors and now the Washington Wizards.
The usual lukewarm assurances of players needing to play better are already trotted under new head coach Ime Udoka, and while it’s easy enough to say a few words that seem to take responsibility for the loss, we’ll take a closer look. one player – level of analysis per player for our next round of Celtics player reviews.
Let’s get to work handing out a pie to blame.
Grant Williams – 6 points

Williams had a night shot but found ways to contribute by hitting the line in a critical stretch as the rest of the team couldn’t seem to score from anywhere on the floor.
It certainly wasn’t his best night in a while, but we’re not going to pin much of it on the Tennessee product.
Rating: C
Dennis Schroder – 22 points, 6 assists, 2 steals
Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports
Schroder had perhaps the best all-around game for the Celtics, active and energetic on both sides, sometimes seemingly the only player to keep the team in the game.
Passing 4 of 6 at 3 points and 6 of 6 from the free throw line must have made more than one question whether Boston should use the German Prosecutor’s General in a starting role to move forward .
Rating: B +
Al Horford – 16 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists

If anyone can claim to have played as well or better throughout the game than Schroder, it’s Horford.
The Florida product was Boston’s anchor throughout the game, supporting the team in their listless stretches and preventing the contest from turning into an embarrassing loss.

Robert Williams III – 13 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks

The story continues
Timelord has also been among the team’s most consistent players this season, strange as it sounds to write this down.
While the switch everything approach to defense is still a work in progress for Williams, his growth as a player bodes well for Boston if he recovers elsewhere.
Rating: B +
Marcus Smart – 7 points, 3 assists, 3 steals
(AP Photo / Charles Krupa)
Marcus Smart revealed after Boston’s overtime victory over the Charlotte Hornets that he had recently been battling an illness unrelated to COVID-19, which may have been a factor in his patchy performance.
And while it’s too early to say for sure, the case for moving the native Flower Mound to the bench to get more shooters on both units is growing stronger.
Grade: C-
Jayson Tatum – 23 points, 7 rebounds
Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports
In some ways, there’s a lot to like about Tatum hitting the line 8 times on a night where his shot wasn’t dropping, but we would have felt better about his performance had he backed that up with marks and a sharp increase in assists.
Instead, we saw the Duke product wasting a potential swing-shift game to chat with a referee over phantom contact, gaining technique in what was a swing-shift game. It is not leadership.
Rating: F
Jaylen Brown – 13 points, 4 rebounds
(AP Photo / Charles Krupa)
Some of Brown’s bad night was definitely coming into his head, and some could be physical. But in many ways, we think the Georgia native is as or maybe even better positioned to lead this team than his fellow All-Star striker.
So we can’t absolve Brown from these long stretches of uninspired and focused play. More than any skills he or Tatum could acquire this season, consistency will be the factor that sees this season and their career arcs change for the better.
Or continue to disappoint.
