Israel continued with plans in the occupied West Bank to build around 3,000 houses for Jewish settlers, Reuters reported on Thursday (October 28).
Such a move ignores the criticisms of the Biden government of Israel’s settlement policy.
On Tuesday, October 26, the Biden administration said it “strongly” opposed any new construction in the West Bank, the Hindustan Times reported.
“We strongly oppose the expansion of the settlements, which is totally incompatible with efforts to reduce tensions and ensure calm, and this undermines the prospects for a two-state solution,” he told reporters. State Department spokesman Ned Price, Wednesday, October 27.
A senior Palestinian Authority official lamented that the settlement policy of Israel’s new coalition government showed similar signs of hostility towards the Palestinians compared to the government of former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The new prime minister, Naftali Bennett of the far-right party called the New Right, has come under considerable pressure from Zionists and settler advocacy groups to speed up settlement plans.
But Israel’s settler colonialism risks creating ruptures in its relations with the United States.
Such a policy could also lead to political problems within the ruling coalition made up of the New Right Party, Yesh Atid, the United Arab List and the Blue and White Party, among others.
Since the coalition is made up of left-wing and Arab parties and the parliamentary majority is barely above the threshold, sweeping plans for settler expansion could shatter the coalition, thereby dissolving the government. .
