Liverpool’s record 5-0 win at Man Utd: Solskjaer at “lowest”

Wayne Rooney sided with Cristiano Ronaldo and claimed it is the Manchester United players, not the manager, to blame for their current unease.

The position of United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under scrutiny this week after overseeing Sunday’s humiliating 5-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The result means the Red Devils haven’t won any of their last four Premier League games and already face an uphill battle to catch current leaders Chelsea.

In the aftermath of the defeat, there were many calls for Solskjaer to be relieved of his post, although decision-makers are ready to follow him for this weekend’s trip to Tottenham.

Shortly after the beating, Ronaldo took to social media and suggested they and his teammates alone should bear the blame and told them now is the time to deliver.

“Sometimes the result is not what we are fighting for,” the 36-year-old wrote on social media. Sometimes the score is not what we want.

“And it’s up to us, only us, because there’s no one else to blame. Our fans have been, once again, amazing in their continued support.

“They deserve better than that, much better, and it’s up to us to hold on. It is now!”

And now Ronaldo’s former Manchester United colleague Rooney has confirmed his assessment, claiming a number of Solskjaer’s players are dropping him for lack of effort on the pitch.

“There is a big responsibility on these players. They are world class players, international players and a club like United needs more,” Rooney told The Times.

“These players need to be injured, they need to feel when you lose games how much it hurts you.

“I see too many players who don’t want to back down, don’t want to defend and don’t want to put everything on the line for this club and that is not acceptable.”

Rooney added, “Are you telling me it’s the manager’s fault or the players’ fault?” I do not know.

“The players have to question themselves. It’s too easy for the manager to take the whole stick when these players are paid a lot of money to do the job and I don’t think they are doing it well enough.”

However, while Rooney absolved Solskjaer of some of the blame, he asserted that any decision they ultimately make about his future would be the right one.

Asked about sacking Solskjaer’s potential, Rooney replied: “Whatever decision they make, they will feel it is the right decision.

“What I do know is you can’t just bow to what the press want or what the fans want. I’m sure United have a plan in place, whether it’s with or without Ole.

“They are very educated people at the top of the club. I’m sure they’ll be looking at everything to see how they go forward in the near future, whether it’s with Ole or not.”
