The NCB Special Investigation Team (SET), which is investigating allegations of attempted extortion in the cruise ship drug trafficking case, can only progress if they speak to independent witness Prabhakar Sail, a senior official here said on Friday.

BCN Deputy Director General Gyaneshwar Singh, who heads the five-member SET, said he has recorded statements from five Narcotics Control Bureau officials and three others so far.

Sail is among those who have accused NCB area manager Sameer Wankhede and other officials of attempting to extort money after drugs were allegedly seized from a cruise ship off the coast of the coast of Mumbai and that Aryan Khan, the son of actor Shah Rukh Khan, was arrested among others. Wankhede has denied all of the allegations.

Mumbai Police, who are also separately investigating the allegations, had recorded Sail’s statement in the past three days.

Singh said they tried to contact Sail and also asked the Mumbai Police Commissioner for help as “there was information in the media that he was in contact with the police and they were reviewing him” . “We have also appealed to Sail through the media to come forward to record his statement and submit the evidence as we are unable to serve him notice,” the NCB official said, adding that the team had also contacted his relatives.

“I expect he can join the investigation and make a valid statement as he is our most critical witness and without him it is not possible to come to a conclusion,” Singh said. .

The NCB team will also ask a court to seek leave to question KP Gosavi, another witness in the cruise ship drugs case who is now in the custody of Pune Police in a case of cheating, he said.

When asked if Aryan Khan would also be called for investigation, Singh said everyone to be interviewed would be summoned, but he could not speak to any specific individual. PTI
