The NWSL has accepted the terms of the eight Players Association demands made by the group earlier this month following allegations of sexual coercion against former North Carolina Courage coach Paul Riley, the NWSLPA reported on Friday.
“Each of these requests is seen by the players as a further step towards the goal of taking over our league,” NWSLPA President Tori Huster said in a statement.
The NWSL responding to player requests is reporting a collaboration between players and the league after players request changes to be made.
As part of the agreement, the NWSL commits to conduct a transparent investigation overseen by a committee of five, including two representatives of the NWSLPA. The league says the investigation will broadly review all instances of improper conduct and seek to identify systemic deficiencies regarding player safety.
On October 6, the players’ association forwarded the list of requests to the NWSL with eight specific requests. While the NWSLPA intended to launch its own independent investigation, Friday’s news shows how they have worked with the league to ensure that they are instead directly involved in the league investigation.
The first request of the NWSLPA was that every coach, general manager, board member and owner participate voluntarily. The players wanted the investigation to extend to the 12 teams in the NWSL to determine if any further abuse had occurred. Among their demands, the players asked the league to disclose all investigation reports and findings.
In addition, on the roster, players called for a new policy requiring that “anyone in a position of power”, such as an owner, involved in the hiring or firing of a coach who is the subject of ‘an inquiry into the governance of the NWSL be suspended, pending the conclusion of an independent inquiry.
The players wanted to play a role in finding a new NWSL commissioner, and they asked to meet with potential candidates and have the “opportunity to be heard” in the hiring process. Their demand followed the ouster of former commissioner Lisa Baird, who was released from her post a day after a report from The Athletic on the detailed charges against Riley by former players Sinead Farrelly, Mana Shim and Kaiya McCullough, who reported on his experiences with the Spirit of Washington.
The list of demands was released the same night the NWSL resumed after a brief hiatus following Riley’s allegations. That night, the players sparked a wave of protests by stopping play in the sixth minute of games for what they called a moment of “solidarity”.
