A House ethics committee has cleared U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, of wrongdoing after being fined for allegedly ignoring a metal detector inside the Capitol.
The House ethics committee reported on Monday that a majority of commissioners voted in favor of Huizenga’s appeal. The committee dropped a $ 5,000 fine that Huizenga was slapped on after U.S. Capitol Police reported that Huizega avoided metal detectors stationed outside the House bedroom in response to the riot of January 6.
Brian Patrick, communications director of Huizenga, had previously said the fine was “absurd”.
“We appreciate that the committee has resolved this issue and cleared up any misunderstanding,” Patrick said on Monday.
The incident happened on August 23, according to a report from the United States Capitol Police. Huizenga allegedly left the House’s bedroom and avoided the metal detector on his way back inside.
The United States House has passed rules imposing fines on lawmakers who refuse to comply with the security checks required to enter the chamber. The first offense costs $ 5,000 and the second $ 10,000.
