Are social networks to blame?

Bathrooms were violently destroyed at Bridge Park in Battle Creek. Authorities believe the challenges of social media may be to blame.

Calhoun County Parks shared disturbing photos of a “significant act of vandalism” on their Facebook page at Historic Bridge Park in Emmet Township. The post was shared more than 600 times in ten hours. “Significant” is an understatement, as the toilet and porcelain sink in an indoor bathroom were violently and completely destroyed. Emmett Township Public Safety is investigating using video footage.

Social media questioned the perpetrators’ motives, offered their best wishes for capture, and a few vigilantes made suggestions on punishing those responsible for serious acts. From the comments:

It’s disgusting !! Distribute the images to everyone! Let the public find them, I hope they catch who did it! So unnecessary and unnecessary! Grow up people. The challenges aren’t worth it, especially if you’re found and taken to jail. Wow !! It’s sad that they have nothing better to do than destroy something! I don’t care how old you are, whoever did this must be accused like an adult! They have to spend a lot of time in prison. It’s so heartbreaking !!! I don’t understand why people have to be like this and destroy things !!!

Ironically, social media may have been the motivation. In September and October, numerous media reported a “destructive new craze for TikTok [that] has teenagers stealing and damaging property in schools. Many of these incidents involved plumbing vandalism, and that may be exactly what happened here at Historic Bridge Park in Battle Creek.
