Very often in conversations we hear the often repeated words: “The system is the problem”. That neither the system will be repaired nor the problem addressed is obvious. Whether it is a person seeking legal remedies and desperate for artificial delays, or a person submitting requests / proposals for approvals and clearances and receiving unfair treatment, or a bank account holder trying to carry out financial transactions and running into a roadblock, the blame is on the system.
Sometimes the system is manipulated without warning, shocking the victim. Tamper-evident systems are the need of the hour given the kind of times we live in. Although the design of a waterproof system is a part, the system is also relevant to human beings.
Human beings come in all shapes and sizes with their own engines and a moral compass that can be completely lax. Any system, no matter how simple, when used successfully, gives the user a sense of emotion and a sense of accomplishment, whether it is their car or a new phone.
But that shouldn’t be an incentive to crack or play with the same ones for not-so-honorable reasons – money, fraud, favors.
On the contrary, the operator should be encouraged to contribute to the improvement of the system. Living as we do in an age when the line between ethical and unethical is completely blurred and people are easily misled, an unsuspecting victim is mistreated and must pay a heavy price.
Our computers necessarily require the installation of anti-virus / firewall software in order to avoid hacking and crashes. When the virus is of a different type, such as corruption, malpractice, or manipulation, the challenges are much greater.
A good place to start is to work with the humans who run the system and define the lines between good and evil. Fear of punishment might be a deterrent, but the rewards of doing what is right for one’s own good must be explained.
A litmus test with key touchstones – am I doing the right thing, will my actions be right, and if I was the person in question, will I like him – must evolve. With moral science of any kind having left our school curricula, alternative measures must be taken before we become a totally decadent and unethical society.
