Diva. Narcissistic. Self-centered. Manipulate.
Critics of Aaron Rodgers were out in force on Wednesday after the news broke the Green Bay Packers quarterback had tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Sunday’s game in Kansas City. And they weren’t holding back.
What pissed people off wasn’t just the fact that Rodgers had tested positive. It’s the fact that Rodgers is considered unvaccinated by the NFL, but gave the impression earlier this season that he was vaccinated.
When Rodgers was asked on August 26 if he was vaccinated, he replied, “Yes, I have been vaccinated. You know, there’s a lot of conversation around that, around the league, and a lot of guys who’ve made statements and not statements, owners who’ve made statements. There are guys on the team who haven’t been vaccinated. I think it’s a personal decision. I’m not going to judge these guys.
Turns out Rodgers was one of “those guys.” And many members of the national media have lambasted Rodgers for his handling of the situation.
Here’s what some had to say about Rodgers:
Bill Simmons, bestselling author, podcaster and sports analyst
“I think Rodgers is a diva. I think he’s been a diva the last few years. I thought the way he handled this whole offseason was very diva. He didn’t seem like a team guy to begin with. I couldn’t understand why he picked NFL Draft Week to make it an even bigger story.
“Sometimes people get weird as they get older… and sometimes singles start to get a little narcissistic and start seeing all that ‘me, me, me, me’ lens.
“And to me, he just seemed like a classic narcissist last year where it was all someone else’s fault. He didn’t take any responsibility… and everything he did, I think, kind of compromised his team.
Dan Orlovsky, ESPN analyst
“When you make that choice (to be unvaccinated) and there are real-life consequences, there are also consequences for your teammates as a starting quarterback in the NFL. Everyone relies on Aaron to be available. And when you make the choice to increase your chances of not being available, it won’t just impact you. It’s going to impact everyone in this building.
Colin Cowherd, national talk show host
“Isn’t that a bit about Aaron’s mark?” Aaron does what he wants, says what he wants. Wasn’t that the Green Bay Packers’ criticism of Aaron? He’s not really a team guy. He’s a guy from Aaron. Isn’t that kind of on the mark that Aaron isn’t vaccinated… sort of manipulated the media over the summer by saying he was immune.
“Being a quarterback is about a lot of things and one of them is judgment and leadership and I don’t like that as a leadership choice as a star quarterback who isn’t vaccinated. I don’t like Aaron the leader. This in the mark. He manipulates the press. He does what is best for him. The thing about Aaron who lies, who manipulates, that bothers me.
Marcus Spears, former ESPN player and analyst
“Yes, that was misleading when he said, ‘I’m immune. This is misleading because I know a lot of people left thinking he had been vaccinated based on this statement. Let’s get this elephant out of the room.
“I’m never going to sit in a seat and tell a man what to do or not to do. But you have to accept responsibility based on the things put forward by the NFL. “
