Vaughan “to comment on the ashes” despite BBC suspension amid allegations of racism

Michael Vaughan is reportedly still open to comment on The Ashes despite his suspension from the BBC over allegations of racism.

The former English captain, 47, was dismissed from his post by the mega broadcasting company after allegedly using racist language towards Azeem Rafiq during their stay at Yorkshire CCC.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, he admitted he was named in the report on alleged racism in Yorkshire, which resulted in his removal from his weekly show on BBC Radio 5, Tuffers and Vaughan.

But Vaughan has received support from Fox Sports and will provide expert analysis for the TV station, the Daily Mail reports.

They will supply the audio to BT Sport, which has signed a four-year contract with Cricket Australia to stream the Ashes in the UK.

It has been alleged that he told Rafiq and three other Asian players that there were “too many of you, we have to do something about this” – a claim Vaughan vehemently denied.

He said: “I completely and categorically deny ever having said these words. It hit me very hard. It was like being hit on the head with a brick.

I have nothing to hide. The comment “you very much” never occurred. Anyone who tries to remember words spoken 10 years ago will be fallible, but I am adamant those words have not been used.

Former Pakistan international Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, who also played for Yorkshire, told ESPNCricinfo he heard Vaughan make the comments in question.

Michael Vaughan has resigned from the BBC over an allegation of racism.

The BBC issued a statement following its decision, which reads: The BBC takes any allegation of racism very seriously.

“The allegation against Michael Vaughan predates his time working for the BBC, we were not part of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club investigation and we did not have access to the subsequent report.

“However, we were made aware of only one allegation which Michael strongly denies and we have been monitoring the situation closely.

“We have made the editorial decision that Michael will not appear as a presenter on 5 live Tuffers and Vaughan Show on Monday.

“The show focuses on discussions of current cricket issues and given his personal involvement, we need to make sure we maintain the impartiality of the program. We remain in discussion with Michael and his team.

Between 1999 and 2008, Vaughan played 82 test games and scored 5,719 runs at an average of 41.

Vaughan is one of England’s most influential captains and made history when he led the team to their first Ashes Series victory in 18 years in 2005.
