China has resorted to all kinds of propaganda techniques to blame the origin of COVID-19 using different conspiracy theories such as political statements, state-run news media, social media and other rap songs. The latest conspiracy theory story blamed lobsters from the United States as the source of the coronavirus which began to spread in the Asian country at the end of 2019.
A news report claimed that a shipment containing 55 cans of Boston lobsters that reached Shanghai on November 11, 2019 could be responsible for the origin of COVID-19.
The HK Post reported that an information portal named Sina said the traceability of the coronavirus is indicated at the cold chain level of U.S. seafood. The article then added: “Therefore, it is quite possible that the virus attaches itself to the cold chain packaging of this batch of seafood in the United States and enters the fruit market. of South China Sea. ”
The latest propaganda campaign in China took place against a backdrop where Beijing continually denies that the coronavirus has leaked from the Wuhan laboratory.
Earlier in November 2020, China even claimed that the new coronavirus had been found on shrimp from Saudi Arabia. To push the baseless theory further, China suspended imports of beef from Brazil. Chinese state media Global Times also said the Brazilian beef sent to the Wuhan market was found with an active coronavirus. The Wuhan Animal Market in China is also one of the earliest known clusters of COVID-19 in the country, where the pandemic originated from.
Chinese State Media ‘Pushing’ Theories: Researcher
Chinese state media are touting the theory of the coronavirus spreading through Brazilian beef, Saudi shrimp and Maine lobsters, according to the researcher who has studied hundreds of accounts with a pro-China program. Researcher Marcel Schliebs, while writing for the international think tank Policy Research Group (POREG), identified “hundreds of accounts affiliated with the pro-China agenda advancing the theory that exported deli meats are a reason of the spread of the coronavirus “.
“Chinese state media seem interested in proving that beef from Brazil, shrimp from Saudi Arabia and pork from the United States are the reason for the spread of the coronavirus,” POREG’s “China watcher” said.
The report, published on the official website, said the latest edition of these claims by China said lobsters from Maine are the sole reason for the drastic spread of the coronavirus, which was first detected in the country. at the end of 2019 before engulfing the whole world in chaos.
Notably, Schliebs analyzed the Twitter feed of several pro-Chinese accounts for nearly 18 months and deduced that the “Maine lobster theory” had been pushed by Chinese diplomat Zha Liyou, who is stationed at the Kolkata consulate. .
