While Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said it was a plot to create community tensions, the BJP said the government of Maharashtra will have to take responsibility if the situation in Amravati was getting out of hand.

Violent protests in parts of the state have sparked a blame game between ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi and the opposition Bharatiya Janata party. While Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said it was a plot to create community tensions, the BJP said the state government will have to take responsibility if the situation was getting out of hand.

The NCP demanded action against the former chairman of the Shiite council Wasim Rizvi. “The protests were against the violence in Tripura and the books published by the former chairman of the Shiite Waqf Council, Wasim Rizvi. It was the responsibility of the outfits that issued the bandh’s appeal to ensure that he was observed in a peaceful manner. They cannot deny responsibility. The central government should also guarantee action against Rizvi who has faced numerous cases of scams and irregularities, ”said NCP leader and state minister of minority affairs Nawab Malik. Rizvi, who is the former head of the Shiite Waqf Central Council, is under investigation by the CBI for alleged irregularities and the illegal sale and purchase of Waqf properties.

Maharashtra Congressman Nana Patole said the violence was an attempt by the BJP to create community tensions ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. BJP lawmaker Atul Bhatkhalkar called for a ban on the Raza Academy, which had called the bandh. Bhatkhalkar said the Raza Academy was used to create a community division by engaging people in the community. “The state government should immediately propose a ban on the outfit and send the proposal to the Center,” he said.

Saeed Noori, general secretary of the Raza Academy, said their appeal for the bandh was a peaceful protest, but there had been deliberate attempts to give it a community twist. “We made it clear that everything should be peaceful and that there should be no use of force. The violence is the work of certain elements who want to create community tensions, ”he declared.
