Dan Walker and Nadiya Bychkova took to the dance floor again during Saturday’s Strictly Come Dancing to perform American song Smooth to toe tapping, King of the Road. The BBC Breakfast host steadily improved throughout the competition, but failed to finish in the upper ranks of the standings. And given the criticisms made by Judge Craig Revel Harwood last night, BBC viewers would be forgiven for thinking Dan wouldn’t end up fighting once again at the top – although it was pro Nikita Kuzmin who also had makes the fans talk.

The moment came when Dan and Nadiya joined host Tess Daly after their performance to hear comments from the judges.

The BBC presenter and his professional partner were beaming, visibly pleased with their performance, and Chief Justice Shirley Ballas even stood up to applaud the duo.

“I loved it,” Dan said right away. “I had good advice this week: it has nothing to do with the Americans, it’s a question of gentleness.

With the enthusiasm in the studio, they were quickly cut down when Tess turned to Craig for comment.

“It lacked feeling,” Craig weighed in quickly. “I thought there was a desperate lack of style throughout the set.

“It should be really stylish and it wasn’t.

“There was no sway and sway,” Craig’s harsh critic continued. “It wasn’t for me, I’m afraid.”

Dan could only watch with his mouth open as Craig ripped through his performance – and he wasn’t alone as the cameras turned to Nikita and Tilly Ramsay watching from afar.

And Dan’s scores reflected his marked improvement after getting 29 from the judges – although Craig still got a low score of four.

BBC viewers at home were quick to criticize Craig for his negative comments, but many were also more distracted by Nikita’s outspoken reaction.
