Residents blame telecommunications shutdown as bandits kill six and others go missing in Katsina village

As many as six people were killed on Friday when gunmen attacked the village of Gwarjo in the Matazu local government area in Katsina state.

Residents identified the deceased as Abdu Bahillace, Ali Niga, Bello Yusuf, Dan Ulli, Samia Ayya and Abdullahi Ulli.

The gunmen also reportedly injured nine other people, identified as Lawal Muhammed, Abubakar Sada, Muhammed Sani, Isyaku Yahaya, Muawiya Dogon, Gambo Arasi, Buhari Mamman, Ibrahim Garba and Mamuda Yahaya.

PUNCH Metro found that although the dead villagers were buried on Saturday, some residents could not be found on Sunday.

Our correspondent learned that shutting down telecommunications in the community made it difficult for residents to seek help from neighboring communities and security guards.

The armed men, who arrived in the village around 9 p.m. and fired at random, reportedly operated until the early hours of Saturday.

Efforts to elicit feedback from the state police’s public relations officer, SP Gambo Isah, and the governor’s special security adviser, Ahmad Katsina, have failed.

They neither took their calls nor responded to text messages sent to their phones at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday.
