Former Rangers striker Ally McCoist believes Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire was right to celebrate as he did after giving England the lead in their 5-0 win over England. ‘Albania Friday evening.
The United center-back, who will be hoping to help the Three Lions secure their place for next year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar when they face San Marino on Monday night, celebrated his excellent header by putting on first cupping his ears and then putting his fingers in his ears which many suspected him of symbolizing the blocking of recent criticisms leveled at him.
Maguire has not been short of criticism in recent weeks following a string of poor performances at United, which coincided with the Reds’ collective struggle for results. The defender has come under fire for his role in the defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City, prompting several calls from United supporters for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to remove him from his starting lineup.

However, Maguire, certainly on the international stage, produced a much improved performance against Albania.
While the great Roy Keane was not very impressed with the celebratory actions of the ex-Leicester City man, McCoist saw no harm in Maguire’s decision to celebrate the way he did.
McCoist told talkSPORT: “He has been criticized recently, but let’s be frank, the criticism has been justified because he has not played well with four or five of his Manchester United team-mates.
“So the criticisms leveled at him were justified. Was that overdone? Maybe. Maybe a little. But I certainly have no problem with him reacting by scoring a drank like he did.
“I heard Conor Coady defend him, saying the criticism was a little harsh. You know what, it could have been. But he answered it the right way; go score, go play well and go get a nice win. .
“I can understand that, but let’s get one thing clear. Roy Keane, for example, is very, very frank in his opinions, no matter what he says. Generally speaking, he’s right most of the time, Roy Keane , I tell you.
“I don’t think anyone can argue that Roy Keane’s criticisms of Harry Maguire and others in this Manchester United side have been justified. Whether we think it’s overdone or not is another debate. But there is no doubt that it was justified.
“But fair play to Harry Maguire for coming back and responding to all of his criticisms the way you would like him to be.”
After cupping his ears and then putting his fingers in them, Maguire was blasted by Keane during halftime on Friday night.
“When a player scores and puts his hands over his ears he acts like the criticism is closed but I think it’s embarrassing he’s been a disgrace for Man United,” Keane told ITV Sport. “He thinks he’s scoring there, he silences his critics, it’s embarrassing.”
