A day after Trinamool Congressman Dinhata (TMC) MP Udayan Guha sparked a feud over his claim that Border Security Force (BSF) personnel inappropriately touch women during a Indo-Bangladeshi borders, this last Wednesday called the allegation unfortunate and unfounded. .
Speaking to the media, BSF ADG YB Khurania said: The allegations are unfortunate. We have over 4,000 women personnel and soldiers in our force. Video surveillance is installed at all entrances to border areas. All allegations are thoroughly investigated and if there is a specific complaint, it should be investigated.
Controversy erupted when a resolution was passed in the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal against the Centre’s decision to increase the jurisdiction of BSFs in the existing 15 km state 50 km from the border. While opposing the decision, Guha accused the OSB of inappropriate behavior in searching women.
Meanwhile, BSF said there were a sufficient number of female border security personnel and that video surveillance was installed at all entry points.
Speaking on the issue of increased jurisdiction, Khurania said the BSF’s powers are limited to seizure and search. We are not allowed to file FIRs. It is our job to find and apprehend offenders. We have good relations with the state police and exchange information with them. Sometimes operations are carried out jointly. The notification does not give any additional power to BSF. The extension of jurisdiction to the border will not mean interference with the maintenance of public order. BSF is not an investigative agency, he said.
Khurania also added that if their jurisdiction is increased, it will not be necessary to create a new border post (BOP). BSF will continue to operate in the 50 km section as it operates within 15 km of the border.
In October, the Center amended the Law on Border Security Forces (BSF) which allows the force to make seizures and arrests in a larger 50 km section, instead of 15 km, of the border international in a few states, including West Bengal.
Guha’s remark on the BSF jaws has been widely criticized. He had said: We have seen the kind of atrocities that BSF (staff) commits on people. A child who has seen his mother inappropriately touched in the search dress, when she returns from the field, can never be a patriot, no matter how many times you chant Bharat Mata ki Jai in front of him. These incidents give rise to anti-social elements.
