Taking a firm stand on Delhi’s air pollution crisis, a Supreme Court tribunal hearing the case today said those who sit in 5-star hotels in Delhi continue to blame farmers for the increase in air pollution in the nation’s capital. Hearing the case, Judge Surya Kant today strongly criticized the Center.
“What he sees is the plight of farmers. People sitting in Delhi in 5, 7 star hotels criticize how they contribute 4%, 30% or 40% to pollution. Have you seen their ( farmers) earn by land ownership? CJI says we ignore the fact that firecrackers are burning despite the ban? ” the Supreme Court said today.
The Supreme Court responded to the submission of Senior Counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the Delhi government that stubble burning was one of the contributors to the air pollution that needs to be addressed and referred to the figures of the Center on the matter.
Chief Justice NV Ramana pointed out that there has to be some accountability. Not everything can be done by court orders. He sought to find out why firecrackers were allowed to be burned in Delhi in the 10 days after Diwali. The bench reiterated that it is not inclined to penalize farmers and that state governments should persuade them to stop stubble burning.
In its response to the Supreme Court, the Delhi government said the nation’s capital was the one place that had completely switched to working from home mode among all of those involved in the case. Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “I am [Delhi is] the only state in five that switched to 100% working from home. We have also given our full financial support. “
The Supreme Court is hearing a case filed by a 17-year-old Delhi student over air pollution in Delhi and adjacent areas due to stubble burning.
