Own. MTV released a statement after The Challenge alumnus Leroy Garrett accused the network of mishandling a racist incident between him and his co-star Camila Nakagawa in 2017.
MTV and Bunim / Murray were saddened by Leroy Garretts’ account of his experience on The Challenge in 2017, the network said in a statement obtained by Us Weekly. We apologize to Leroy who is a beloved member of The Challenge family. As we looked to support the cast and resolve the on-air incident at the time, it’s now clear that we haven’t done enough. We have learned from this experience and continue to double our education programs for all actors and the team to ensure a safe, respectful and inclusive whole, free from discrimination and harassment in any form.

Nakagawa, 33, called Garrett, 36, a black shrink in the middle of an explosion of drunkenness that took place during season Dirty 30 of the MTV reality show. She later screamed, It’s all about black motherfuckers like that bit of the street!
Garrett brought up the argument the next morning while host TJ Lavin was in attendance, and Nakagawa then apologized. Although the Real World: Las Vegas alumnus was hopeful his co-star would be sent home for his remarks, Lavin, 44, instead focused on discussions about the game.
I thought, what’s going on? Isn’t anyone about to talk about what happened? Imagine that, Garrett recalls in an Instagram video posted on Monday, November 15. The producers didn’t tell TJ to say something. I have to say something. I was the victim last night and I have to explain why something happened to me and force someone to apologize for someone who wasn’t going to do it on their own. Breathtaking for me.
Johnny Bananas Devenanzio defended his friend in an interview at the time, but the Michigan native was disappointed the channel didn’t follow suit. This is how everyone should feel. MTV is how you should feel, he said in the Instagram video. Obviously, you don’t. It is truly heartbreaking and it is sad. To know that a network that at this point I’ve given at least seven or eight, everything, you guys, you just save it. You don’t do anything to help me. Nothing.
Garrett claimed that MTV awarded [Nakagawa] for being racist and violent in allowing her to finish the season, which she ultimately won. He also alleged that he was asked if he wanted to speak to a therapist after the incident.
I don’t want to see a damn therapist. I want you to do something, he remembered thinking at the time. I want you to stand up for me the same person you call every season and I run, I want you to do something for me. Why aren’t you doing anything? I do not understand. The fear that I had to speak. It’s not a business that loves you.
Garrett, who retired from the franchise after appearing on Double Agents earlier this year, concluded the video by challenging MTV to take action. I am more than willing to have a conversation with you on how we can make changes, he said. The ball is in your court. All eyes are on you.
Nakagawa, for her part, apologized for her past comments and revealed in an Instagram Live on Tuesday, November 16 that she was taking anti-racism classes.
I don’t want forgiveness, I’m not the victim. What I did was wrong. It’s wrong, she admitted. I want to know what I can do. I don’t endorse racism and I don’t endorse what I have done. From the bottom of my heart, I know Leroy doesn’t care about me, and that’s good. It is his right. I probably would have laughed at someone who did that to me too. But I always had a special place for him in my heart. I have always loved it so much and I don’t even understand why I did what I did. If regret could kill, I would be dead for sure.
