Big 12 suspends Texas Tech radio team after criticizing referees

The Big 12 has removed Texas Tech radio play-by-play announcer Brian Jensen and color analyst John Harris for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State in response to their live comments criticizing the game’s officials from the conference in last week’s win over Iowa State.

“I understand the roles of the play-by-play and color analyst,” Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a statement. “However, as representatives of the university, they also have an obligation to abide by the conference policy regarding commenting on game officials.

“Comments from the Red Raider Radio Network booth advertisers were at odds with expected levels of respect and professionalism. Questioning the integrity of conference officials and specifically calling members of the officials team goes well beyond- beyond appropriate and permitted behavior. “

Jensen and Harris contested numerous calls against Texas Tech throughout the game, especially in the fourth quarter.

“It’s absolutely another horrible call, or no call,” Harris said after a heavy blow to Red Raiders wide receiver Myles Price was not considered for targeting, according to The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr. .

“This team of officials and the replay team, which were absolutely horrible today, a blatant non-examination of that. It’s absolute targeting and they’re not even going to review it,” Harris added. .

Announcers also made good comments after officials called off a goal-line interception by Texas Tech’s Dadrion Taylor-Demerson with 7:25 left and the Red Raiders 38-28.

“I’ll say it right away, the Big 12 don’t want Iowa State to lose this game,” Harris said, according to ESPN’s Dave Wilson.

Jensen added, “Bob Bowlsby, you have to answer that.… It’s ridiculous. The inconsistency of this referee squad in favor of Iowa State. Unbelievable.”

Texas Tech fans threw objects at the field after the interception was canceled, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct appeal against the team.

“The Big 12 should be embarrassed with this group. We only flagged two guys. I’ll read them all to you,” said Jensen, who then named each member of the team officials.

Texas Tech won 41-38 from a field goal for 62 yards. After the game, the Red Raiders Twitter account ironically tweeted: “This final score cannot be undone.”
