Two white Florida teens used the N word in a racist Snapchat video – in which one also wears a white hood – but a school administrator dismissed the clip as a mere “joke,” according to local reports.
The viral video was recorded over the summer but was recently shared with black students at Yulee High School, WJXT-TV reported.
“The video was not intended to be shared outside of a small group of friends and it was not aimed at any particular student,” Nassau County, Fla., Deputy school superintendent Mark Durham said. in a statement last week.
“The two students in the video say they meant it was a joke among friends and they had no intention of seeing it outside of their little group.”
The Snapchat video shows two white college students making racist comments – one wearing a white hood in the clip.
“Wait, do you see that? One of the teenagers said. “It’s a… r. “
The video was then passed on to several black college students, who confronted the white teens and had a “physical altercation,” the outlet said.
“The video was not meant to be shared outside of a small group of friends and it was not aimed at any particular student,” Nassau County school vice-principal Mark Durham said. Nassau County School District
School officials suspended the student who sent the video to the black students – then also suspended the black teens for five days for talking to the creators of the clip.
The white teens who made the video were not punished because the district did not have the authority to do so, Durham said.
“Although schools have jurisdiction to discipline students for their behavior both online and off campus in certain circumstances, this case did not meet the criteria,” he said.
“Although the school and the district find this type of joke cruel and heinous and would discipline the students if the law allows it, the circumstances of this case simply do not allow it,” he added. “However, the student who sent the video to several specific students meets the criteria necessary to punish a student …”
But the incident caused a stir at school – and among parents.
Last week, several school football players threatened to forgo a home game – only to be told they would be permanently kicked out of the squad if they did.
At a school board meeting Thursday, more than two dozen parents expressed outrage over the suspensions – and the treatment of white students by children’s gloves.
“There is a misconception that racism is limited to insults and physical violence, but it is more than that,” district mother Christina Guerrier told WJXT. “The initial response from the school administration showed us that hidden racism was in the spotlight.”

Senior Class President Collin Sewel told the board: “This community and our country will see no change if we continue to turn a blind eye to the elephant in the room.”
“Reform, change and equality will not come without your help,” Sewel added.
