OTTAWA – The chairman of the Ottawa Transit Commission said a “simple braking fault” caused a train to stop inside the light rail transit tunnel on Thursday evening.
OC Transpo reported a train stopped at 8:56 p.m., saying passengers would have slightly longer travel times between Rideau and Parliament stations. Twenty minutes later, at 9:17 p.m., the transport service indicated that regular service had resumed between the two stations.
“In the scheme of things, it wasn’t that big of a deal,” Transit Commission chairman Allan Hubley told CTV News Ottawa. “It was a simple brake defect.
“What took us a little while was getting the technician on the train. Once on board he was able to quickly get it started. We entered Ottawa U and transferred the passengers to the train. ‘one of our spare cars, and they continued to where they were going.
A transit passenger said on Twitter (@JRBVoodoo) that the train had been “broken down for 30 minutes” at 8:51 p.m. Thursday. At 9:11 pm, the passenger said “we are free” and the passengers got off the train at the University of Ottawa station.
It was the second train stopped on the Confederation Line this week after it was put back into service on November 12. The LRT line had been out of service for 54 days after the September 19 derailment.
On Tuesday, a train was pulled over at Bayview Station during the afternoon commute. Staff said the train was stopped out of caution when the train operator heard a sound.
Hubley concedes that any issue with the LRT system at this time will not help driver confidence.
“Certainly the passengers seem happy to get the trains back,” Hubley said.
“You are absolutely right, even something simple like a default break is news to you. Hope we continue to get consistent service every day, people will start to trust the system a little more than ‘today.”
