New York Times sports writer Sopan Deb has accused conservatives of selective outrage over the issue of human rights abuses in China, but not so long ago he himself covered their horror united in the face of the National Basketball Association (NBA) acquiescence to the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
On Thursday, Deb tweeted, “I know the Conservatives selectively like to support NBA players when it suits their political agenda. And [LeBron] James is a valid target. But when Tillman Fertitta, Houston Rockets owner and GOP donor, slapped Daryl Morey over the tweet, the Tories fell silent. When Morey, the former Rockets general manager, tweeted in favor of protesters in Hong Kong in October 2019, James called Morey “either misinformed or not fully informed of the situation.”
Fast forward to this week, and Deb was critical of a tweet from Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter aimed at superstar forward LeBron James’ infamous defense of the genocidal government, wondering aloud why Kanter wasn’t going after the genocidal government. two of his teammates who have support agreements with Nike, which does business in China.
When the Washington Examiner’s Jerry Dunleavy put it this way Kanter’s emphasis on James – “maybe because LeBron is an international superstar and the face of the NBA who has criticized people who have criticized China” – Deb replied with his tweet about Tories’ alleged selective support for human rights in China, citing the example of Fertitta, who worked to move Morey’s stance on Hong Kong away from that of the Rockets as an organization.
However, at the time of James ‘first comments on China’s defense, Deb covered the Conservatives’ widespread criticism of not only James, but also the NBA, the Rockets and Commissioner Adam Silver, who works at the name of league owners and their interests.
Senator Sasse not only wrote a Washington Post op-ed lashing out at the ‘surrender’ of the NBA and saying that ‘American businesses must rise to the occasion and aggressively confront China’s bullying campaign’, but he also took the initiative to write a bipartisan letter to Silver expressed “deep concern of a number of lawmakers over recent statements by the NBA and the Houston Rockets.”
Notably, the letter was signed by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who later claimed Deb did not comment on Fertitta’s rebuke of Morey.
Senator Josh Hawley also wrote a letter to Silver and the 30 league owners, informing them that “the NBA and its owners … are immediately turning things around” and “apologize to Mr. Morey.”
Florida Senator Marco Rubio has remained a staunch critic of the NBA since Morey first expressed support for protesters in Hong Kong, pressuring Silver for answers on the abusive NBA-affiliated camps in Xinjiang, where the Chinese government is currently pursuing genocide against the Uyghurs. Muslims.
While James, as the world’s most famous basketball player, has become the subject of criticism for many Republicans, they have reserved much of their fire for the league as well as the Rockets in particular, even though they did not name the relatively anonymous Fertitta. Deb’s own contemporary reporting makes this clear.
