The NHS recommends that adults eat no more than 70g of red or processed meat per day.

Official guidelines state that red meat like beef, lamb and pork is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals and can be part of a balanced diet.

Writing in BMJ Global Health, experts have now revealed that deaths in some countries, attributable to red and processed meat, have increased by 75%.

Countries around the world have increased their consumption of red and processed meat over the past 20 years.

The study looked at the proportions of deaths and years of life lived with a disability (DALYs) attributable to diet due to bowel cancer, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease in people aged 18 and over. 25 years and over in each country.

Experts looked at data from 1993 to 2018 for 154 countries and looked at 14 red meat products.

These were all derived from beef, pork, lamb and goat, and six processed products mainly made from beef and pork, preserved by smoking, salting, curing or chemicals.

Experts found that diet-related deaths associated with the global meat trade increased in three-quarters of 154 countries between 1993-5 and 2016-18.

Comparing the increase in demand in each country with deaths, experts found that this represented 10,898 attributable deaths in 201618, an increase of almost 75% from the 1993-5 figures.

In 2016-2018, the top 10 countries where attributable deaths were most related to meat consumption were the Netherlands, Bahamas, Tonga, Denmark, Antigua and Barbuda, Seychelles, United Arab Emirates , Singapore, Croatia and Greece.

In these countries, meat-related deaths accounted for more than 7 percent of all diet-related deaths.

Importantly, the study was observational – meaning the researchers couldn’t pinpoint a cause.

The researchers acknowledged that many countries import these products for export again, which they say skews their conclusions.

Experts said: This study shows that the global increase in trade in red and processed meat contributes to the sharp increase in food spending [non-communicable diseases].

“Future interventions urgently need to integrate health policies with agricultural and trade policies by cooperating between responsible exporting and importing countries.

It was previously revealed that eating more than 25g of meat per day can increase the risk of bowel cancer.

Experts also found that just one sausage or 3 slices of bacon a day increased the risk of fatal heart disease by 20%.
