The obscenity of segregating children in the name of anti-racism

It’s breathtaking in its wicked perversity: A Manhattan college plans to racially separate 7th and 8th grade students into so-called affinity groups for class discussions about racial identity and social justice. This is a public school that teaches children that the color of their skin matters more than the content of their character.

Principal Shanna Douglas says the exercise serves the schools’ mission to undo the legacy of racism and oppression in this country that impacts our school community. No, it is fueling, even creating, a whole new racism.

Lower Manhattan Community School is 44% Asian, 29% White, 15% Hispanic, and 8% Black. This melting pot surely teaches them a lot about how to get along, fostering friendships that show them that they are not really different. Douglas wants them to obsess over differences that shouldn’t matter at all.

And the city’s Education Department is defending it: DOE flack Nathaniel Styer calls the planned talks a two-day celebration.

Some parents are even convinced of this madness, although one mother admitted that most parents are too afraid to speak out.

Not all: A father told the Post that some families want teachers to focus on academics, not that garbage. Teach history, he says. Tell this story. Im all for honest bookkeeping. But it is something different. It’s insidious.

New York parents have no problem with their children learning about the nation’s history of slavery and discrimination, nor discussing its modern heritage. But the goal should surely be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of a time when we will become one big family of Americans: not white Americans, not black Americans, not Jewish or Gentile Americans, not Irish Americans. or Italians, not Mexican Americans. , not Puerto Rican Americans, just Americans.

Much work remains to be done. But no one needs schools to actively slow down this work by emphasizing maximum racial awareness, let alone imposing racial segregation on junior high school children. Dr King is surely turning in his grave.
