It would be no small feat for the Pittsburgh Steelers to face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night. The coaching staff definitely had their hands full, especially on defense with several players missing all stars. Head Coach Mike Tomlin, the coaching plan was not good enough considering who was available to play.
We didn’t have enough of a plan with our current makeup and condition, Tomlin said.
The Steelers were within two of their top three defensive players. Security Minkah Fitzpatrick was on the reserve / COVID-19 list and on-board rusher TJ Watt missed a knee and hip injury.
But even beyond that, Pittsburgh is thin everywhere and it shows. In particular, the defensive line showed some serious cracks outside of Cam Heyward. Pittsburgh faced two guys who were on the practice squad as well as a PS defender.
The main problem with the Steelers plan was to continue playing the men’s cover on the Chargers as Los Angeles continued to exploit it. Pittsburgh couldn’t put pressure on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert until the end of the game and by ceding his back to Herbert he could take some huge lanes.
This game was definitely a training failure and it’s hard to blame the players when you consider who was on the pitch and who wasn’t.
