Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has an amazing day on Sunday. Herbert threw for 382 yards with three passing touchdowns and rushed for 90 more yards. Herbert is one of the great young quarterbacks in the NFL and he really showed it on his way to the Chargers’ 41-37 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Don’t tell that to head coach Mike Tomlin. After the game, Tomlin didn’t really want to do what Herbert had done so much about him and instead handed him over to the Steelers defense for not doing his job.
Herbert took advantage of a patchwork Steelers defense and attacked the secondary with several reserves in the lineup. Herbert also took advantage of the Steelers insisting on playing the man’s defense, allowing Herbert huge running lanes when the pass rush failed to deliver.
Tomlin succeeded when he said it was up to the team and the coaches. But that goes back to well before Sunday. As the flaws of this list continue to be exposed, it highlights the front office and its failures in building the depth of this list.
