The Belgian Training Movement (MR) has also spoken out against compulsory vaccination in Belgium, joining Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) in openly opposing a nationwide vaccination mandate.

Speaking on Sunday in RTL-TVI’s weekly Cest pas tous jours dimanche, Mr. David Clarinval, Minister for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, said his party was on the same wavelength as Alexander De Croo .

We think it’s a bad idea, he said.

On Friday, after a debate lasting more than 12 hours, the federal government reached an agreement on the rules for compulsory vaccination of health workers. However, he failed to reach a consensus on compulsory vaccination for the entire population and asked Commissioner Corona Pedro Facon to present a report on the subject by January 15, 2022.

The ruling coalition in Belgium is divided on the issue. The Flemish Christian Democratic Party (CD&V) has spoken out strongly in favor of compulsory vaccination for all. The Liberals, on the other hand, oppose the measure.

Ethical and practical considerations

Speaking on this subject, the Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke declared that Philosophically, I have always been skeptical about compulsory vaccination for all, but I changed my mind… With the Delta variant, we know that everyone should be vaccinated, without exception.

The third wing of the federal majority, the Greens, also commented on the issue. Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter said on VRT the emphasis should be on persuasion, adding that she wanted to wait for ethical reviews.

Contacted by the Belga news agency, Ecolos Georges Gilkinet said the discussion on compulsory vaccination was inevitable. We must do it seriously and methodically, make informed decisions on options, he stressed.

This is why I asked for and obtained on Wednesday in an advisory committee a study on the practical and ethical consequences of such a measure, he explained. This is what a final decision will be based on. In the meantime, we must continue to inform the population and try to convince them.
