Frustrated Halo Infinite gamers are asking for optional cross-play to be implemented as cheats and aimbots begin to appear on Xbox and PC.
Halo Infinite’s inevitable cheats frustrate Xbox console gamers, with some blaming PC cross-play. The latest in the long list of Halo games, Halo Infinite released its free multiplayer component earlier this month, with a single player campaign arriving on December 8. The game has already amassed a record number of players, with Halo Infinite topping the Steam charts on the day of its PC release. Most online FPS games are plagued by cheaters and hackers, so it only seemed like a matter of time before they hit Halo Infinite.
Normally, cheats are more common in PC games, which means console gamers don’t have to worry as much about hacking. However, the latest controversy stems from the fact that Halo Infinite enabled cross play without any way to turn it off. For this reason, console and PC gamers almost always play together. Cross-play between consoles and PC has been a point of contention in other games, especially first-person shooters, where the debate over the superiority of the mouse and keyboard over controllers is constant. While Halo Infinite’s cross-play can be toggled to include only certain control schematics, it cannot be platform limited, which means there is no way to ensure players PC (and the hackers among them) won’t end up in an Xbox lobby.

In several discussions on Reddit’s Halo community, players posted video evidence of Aimbot hacks in Halo Infinite and called on developer 343 Industries to make console-PC cross-play optional. User KanoxHD shared a video featuring a player using an aimbot, expressing shock at the appearance of hacks in the game just a week after its release. Meanwhile, altburner69 asked 343 to bring back the series’ classic red reticle when targeting an enemy, a feature presumably removed to make aimbot hacks less effective. Another user, lllXanderlll, argued for the ability to turn Halo Infinite cross play on and off, allowing console and PC gamers to play together without forcing cross play on everyone. User MisticK93RUS also argued for the change, arguing that banned accounts or IP addresses will not solve the problem since the game is free to play and cheaters can simply create a new account or hide their IP.
These issues may seem trivial, but they can be taken seriously by 343. Few players will find the fun of learning the ins and outs of Halo Infinite multiplayer if losing to cheaters becomes all too common. This issue can severely limit the legitimacy of a game and its ranking system, in addition to making it difficult to collect microtransaction revenue from a player base if they stop connecting. Halo Infinite saw massive success early on, but if cheating and other issues aren’t addressed quickly, that could change.
Giving players more options is generally well received, especially when an option can force someone to face unfair odds. Even before the cheating issue arose publicly in Halo Infinite, there were already reasons to provide an option to turn off crossplay. While it’s switchable in the Ranked Arena, the ability to control input-based matchmaking for controllers and mouse and keyboard setups isn’t available in Unrated Playlists. Halo Infinite’s anti-cheat was previously touted as a bulwark between PC cheaters and Xbox gamers, but its effectiveness has already been questioned.
