Oregon basketball loss to Houston draws heavy criticism

[ad_1]

Oregon and Houston likely entered the Maui Invitational anticipating a potential clash in the event’s championship game. Instead, due to Houston’s loss to Wisconsin and Oregon to Saint Mary’s, the two teams met in the finalist game, with Houston crushing Oregon early on on the Cougars’ way to a 78-49 victory.

Oregon have struggled to score this year and have already found themselves down double-digit in the first 10 minutes as the Ducks fell 19-7, a lead Houston reduced to 41-19 in half-time. It almost mirrored half of Houston’s nightmare against Wisconsin, when the Cougars trailed 40-20 before making a run and coming back almost all the way.

That kind of effort wasn’t with the Ducks on Wednesday. With just one Oregon player scoring over eight points, Houston led up to 34 points, shooting almost 63% on the Cougars’ shots inside the arc.

The rebound was important for Houston to show that – one half aside – they remain one of the toughest teams in the country this year. For Oregon, the loss brought the Ducks down to 3-3 with three double-digit losses and raises questions about the Ducks’ long-term viability.
