As losses mount for the Rockets en route to the NBA’s worst record, so do critics. There are plenty of flaws to be found in a 1–16 squad, and Rockets sophomore coach Stephen Silas doesn’t blame disappointed fans or Twitter users for shaking their fists for their opinions. .
Silas, whose father Paul was NBA head coach for 12 seasons, said he’s used to it.
“It’s been a part of my life since I was little, so there are a few parts to it,” Silas said. “There’s the part that it’s entertainment, isn’t it, and that’s so people have things to say and people have things to talk about at the hair salon or on the radio.” . It’s a real life thing for me, but for the people involved in it, sometimes it’s almost like a soap opera. I can’t lose sight of that and it’s just that people have their opinion one way or the other.
Prior to Wednesday’s game against the Bulls, the Rockets had lost 15 straight games. Although dissatisfaction steadily rises among fans, Silas said he believes he is still on the same page with Rockets general manager Rafael Stone and owner Tilman Fertitta.
“I’ve waited and prepared my whole life for this job, so I’m not going to make it any worse than it is,” Silas said. “I’m going to train these guys as hard as I can. I’ll do the things I believe in. I’m going to do them in a way that is smart – which I think is smart – and in a thoughtful way. And if it works, it works. I waited too long for this not to do it in an honest way. So, yes, I understand. I totally understand. But I’ve been there before, I grew up there and this is the job I wanted. This is where I want to be, so we’ll go from there.
