Who is Ralf Rangnick? Man Utd’s interim boss in profile

A former Lokomotiv Moscow chairman criticized Ralf Rangnick ahead of his Manchester United appointment.

The German is set to become the Red Devils’ new interim manager after Sunday’s trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.

Rangnick will replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has been relieved of his post after winning just one of the last seven Premier League games.

The seasoned coach didn’t sign a three-year contract at Lokomotiv until July to become their sports and development manager.

And ex-boss Nikolai Naumov is disappointed with Rangnick’s imminent exit, despite United’s status as one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“It’s not about Manchester,” Naumov told Match TV. “For Rangnick, this is not an escape, betrayal or disgrace. Rangnick is a merchant.

“He doesn’t care about football at all, because he only does business around him. And the more countries, leagues and clubs he covers, the more he will win.

“He is absolutely indifferent to Lokomotiv. He did not come here to play football, but to make money. Now he has been offered money elsewhere, and he and his company will go to United.

“When he is offered to work in Africa, he will go and earn money there, leaving his deputy at Manchester United. Clean business.”

Rangnick is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in Europe after stints in Stuttgart, Schalke, Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.

The veteran manager is credited with creating the Gegenpressing system, deployed by Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann and Jurgen Klopp.

Current United interim manager Michael Carrick won his first game against Villarreal on Tuesday and will also be in dugout against Chelsea.

The Blues currently lead the Premier League, three points behind reigning rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

Andrei Kanchelskis, who played for United between 1991 and 1994, believes Rangnick is a good nomination by his former club.

He questioned the German’s job at Lokomotiv, however, and believes Carrick should have stayed in charge until the end of the season.

“The impressive reputation he has in Germany has apparently led United’s board of directors to consider his appointment,” Kanchelskis told bettingexpert.

“In many ways, if that happens, it seems like a logical rendezvous – a step towards stability.

“At Lokomotiv Moscow he hasn’t done much to change their current situation in his role as director of football – which I would describe as a bit complex to say the least …

“We haven’t seen a huge impact in the six months he’s had, but he’s not been around for a long time in the role. It’s hard to have such an impact during that time.

“I thought Carrick should have stayed in the role until the end of the season, but it looks like it doesn’t and I hope it’s the start of a return to form for the team and a coming period of stability. “
