Albatrosses divorce more than ever, climate degradation is to blame

Albatrosses are disintegrating, although they are documented as largely monogamous creatures and the fault lies with man-made climate degradation.

Researchers say divorce rates are on the rise from previously just one to three percent.

A study published this week describes how rising sea temperatures affect gentle giants, most of whom spend their entire lives with the same partner.

These lives can stretch between 50 and 60 years.

Albatross divorce rate

The study was published in The Royal Society, titled: Environmental variability directly affects the prevalence of divorce in monogamous albatrosses.

The authors started collecting data as early as 2003. They audited the black-browed albatrosses of the Falkland Islands throughout the breeding seasons.

What researcher and co-author Francesco Ventura revealed to The Guardian is that they were surprised that warmer waters were associated with higher divorce rates.

And it was then that a lack of fish was explained.

Warmer sea temperatures may force birds to hunt for longer periods, which the authors say may explain the rates. And that causes the birds to blame their mates.

Venture said on release: We propose this partner blame hypothesis that a stressed female might experience this physiological stress with, and attribute those higher stress levels to poor male performance.

The species is in decline, with flows of up to 10 percent each year.

In addition, another researcher announced that the decrease in the number of populations also changes mating patterns.

We were getting male-male pairs among the birds on Antipodes Island, which we had never had before, said Dr Graeme Elliot of the New Zealand Department of Conservation.

Dr Elliot says some male partners choose other male partners because they can’t find a female partner.
