Four matches, no wins, three draws and one loss, the fate of Hearts of Oak in the 2021/2022 Ghanaian Premier League (GPL) season.

Their poor start leaves them in third place in the GPL standings, just one point above WAFA and Eleven Wonders.

Apparently the Phobians are going through a turbulent time four months after winning the championship last season, but who is to blame?

GhanaWeb explores the various factors behind Hearts’ poor start to the season.

Pride and disunity among the players

Of course, in these frustrating times, supporters start to point fingers at the accusers and assign the blame.

Players who were heroes during the league and the FA Cup triumph a few months ago have come under heavy criticism for not giving their best.

“The players feel too proud of themselves because they think they’ve won the double (League and FA Cup) so that’s okay for now. If someone thinks they can’t play Hearts of Oak, he should pack his bags and leave the club, “former Hearts defenseman Dan Quaye told Adanse FM.

For former player Charles Taylor, he believes it is due to a lack of unity.

Afutu’s exit

Experts, rival fans and part of Hearts of Oak fans believe the loss of Benjamin Afutu has negatively impacted the team’s performance.

Afutu was arguably the most consistent performer for Hearts throughout last season. The box-to-box midfielder barely had a bad game in the colors of the rainbow and was the club’s second top scorer to score 8 goals in all competitions.

Besides pulling the strings in midfield, his offensive performance was wonderful. Hearts couldn’t come to an agreement with him to extend his contract, so the 25-year-old left.

Bad luck with the injuries

Hearts of Oak missed two key players early in the season. The club’s top scorer, Kojo Obeng Junior, and one of their best players, Raddy Ovouka, due to injury.

Raddy was apparently rushed to play in the draw against WAFA on Matchday 2. His only game this season.

Obeng Jnr missed four months of action and has just returned to training this week. Perhaps his return will fix the scoring issues for the two-goal team in five games.

Gladson Awako absent

Hearts of Oak spent 100,000 GH ₵ on Gladson Awako, 31, but the player is yet to make his debut despite signing in August this year. Awako was apologized by Hearts after encountering “personal difficulties” weeks after signing for the club.

Awako has finally returned to training, which is a major relief for head coach Samuel Boadu, who will now have enough offensive options in subsequent matches.

Hearts of Oak sold out against JS Saoura in the CAF Confederation Cup this weekend. Hopefully the Phobians could end their winless streak at Accra Sports Stadium against the Algerians.
