Sean McVay doesn’t blame Matthew Stafford, vehemently defends QB

After throwing just four interceptions in his first eight games with the Rams, Matthew Stafford has now pitched five in his last three, including three pick-sixes. He hasn’t made more than 65% of his passes in any of those games and his overall accuracy has dropped significantly, missing receivers and throwing behind them far too often.

He’s one of the main reasons the Rams are currently on a three-game losing streak, falling further and further behind the Cardinals in NFC West. After losing to the Packers on Sunday, the Rams are now 7-4, two full games away from Arizona and looking nothing like the team they were in the first eight weeks.

Still, Sean McVay is not going to point the finger at his quarterback – or any other player, for that matter. After the game at Green Bay, McVay was asked how he previously called out Jared Goff for his bad play in 2020 and when he would do the same with Stafford.

He gave as passionate a response as ever at a press conference, fiercely defending his quarterback and expressing complete confidence in Stafford.

“What are you trying to – listen, it’s a team game, okay?” I’m not interested in revisiting the past and some of the things that haven’t always turned out the way we wanted, ”said McVay. “There are a lot of different snaps, there are a lot of things he’s done at a high level. When you just want to isolate these individual games, of course we want to be able to play better. It’s not always exclusively about him. We have a guy who has a big property, I have great faith in this guy and I’m not going to sit here and criticize our players. I’m going to be able to look at it, try to say, ‘Hey, here’s where we can fix it, here’s where we can fix it’ and that’s where I feel like my job as a coach. I don’t want to get upset, but it’s a very important thing for all of us. I have complete trust and faith in Matthew Stafford and I think the narrative – everyone wants to throw in six turnovers, all of them have a totally different story and not all of them are their fault. It’s a great team game. We will stay connected. There are a lot of things that frustrate me because I feel responsible for some of these places where our players are and I also want to do better for them. That’s why you piss me off a bit, but I never want to feel like if my tone is disrespectful, I apologize.

McVay has backed Stafford from day one since the Rams acquired him from the Lions. He didn’t have to defend it much in the first eight weeks as the navigation went smoothly for Los Angeles, but in recent weeks Stafford has come under heavy criticism from fans and fans alike. analysts who are not impressed with his game.

McVay hasn’t done him much favors with his playing vocation and heavy reliance on empty backfields, which is why he’s so frustrated with how the Rams have played lately. He feels responsible for some of the inconsistency, as he should.

That’s not to say he takes the blame off his players because he knows turnovers need to stop.

“We have to stop with some of these self-inflicted injuries. It’s going to continue to be a focus and focus for us and expect to start seeing results and that’s what we need to be able to see, ”he said.

The Rams host the Jaguars next week, which should be a good game for McVay’s side. But if they keep playing like they did in their last three games, Jacksonville will have a fighting chance at SoFi Stadium.
