Maxwell vigorously denied any wrongdoing, telling the court in a recent hearing: “I did not commit any crime.”

She faces up to 70 years in prison if convicted of all six counts.

Maxwell allegedly helped Epstein run a sex trafficking business

Maxwell was arrested nearly a year after Epstein was arrested on charges relating to allegations that he ran a sex trafficking business from his home in Manhattan and Palm Beach from 2002 to 2005. This act of accusation alleged that Epstein had worked with employees and associates to attract girls. in his residences and paid some of his victims to recruit other girls whom he would abuse him.

Epstein was found dead in his jail cell shortly after his arrest in 2019. The medical examiner then determined that the cause of death was suicide by hanging.

He was a registered sex offender after pleading guilty to two charges of state prostitution in 2008.

Maxwell, a once very public socialite known for his jet-set with Epstein and other prominent figures like Prince Andrew and former Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, apparently broke down after Epstein’s arrest then that he was disembarking from a flight from Paris in July 2019.

Alleged victims will testify at trial

The four alleged victims in the case are identified in the indictment as minor victims 1-4.

Maxwell was present and involved in some of the abuse alleged by the minor victim-1, according to court documents. This victim allegedly first met Maxwell when she was around 14 and was sexually assaulted by Epstein at his properties in New York and Florida, according to the indictment.

Maxwell “involved” the young girl in a group of “sexualized massages” on Epstein, undressing in front of the young girl and was present when underage victim-1 undressed in front of Epstein, according to the indictment.

Minor Victim-2 traveled to New Mexico in 1996 where Epstein allegedly assaulted her on his ranch.

Maxwell is said to have treated Minor Victim-2, giving her an unsolicited massage while she was topless. Maxwell also encouraged Minor Victim-2 to massage Epstein, according to the indictment.

Judge Alison Nathan ruled ahead of trial that jurors would be told they cannot convict Maxwell based on testimony regarding the sexual behavior between Epstein and a woman identified in the indictment as a minor victim – 3 because she was 17 at the time and therefore within the age of consent in the relevant jurisdictions.

His testimony as a witness will always be relevant to the alleged global conspiracy to induce minors to engage in unlawful sexual behavior.

To befriend and prepare for her, Maxwell introduced the young girl to Epstein in London at the age of 17, according to the indictment.

Maxwell encouraged her to perform sexualized massages during which she was allegedly abused by Epstein in 1994 and 1995.

Minor Victim-4 first met Maxwell when she was recruited at around 14 to give Epstein sexualized massages at his Palm Beach residence. Between 2001 and 2004, Minor Victim-4 received hundreds of dollars in cash for his interactions with Epstein in which he sexually assaulted her, according to the indictment.

The victim also reportedly recruited other young women to offer sexualized massages on Epstein at her and Maxwell’s request. Sometimes Maxwell called the victim from New York to schedule massages on Epstein when he returned to Florida.

Maxwell also sent gifts from New York, including lingerie, to the victim’s Florida home, according to the indictment.

Maxwell’s lawyer maintains that she is innocent and was only charged because Epstein died.

What we might see in court

The trial, which is expected to last around six weeks, will run over the next recess, meaning Maxwell will likely celebrate his 60th birthday in federal prison on Christmas Day.

Jurors will see unhindered Maxwell seated at the defense table in normal clothing and a medical mask – a requirement for everyone in court.

Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, is one of the prosecutors trying the case.

The alleged victims and some other witnesses will testify under pseudonyms or by first name, although the jury will know their identities, according to court documents.

Jurors were able to see Maxwell’s “little black book”

A former employee at Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion will testify about an address book containing contact details of alleged underage victims and prominent celebrities associated with Epstein and Maxwell, according to court documents.

It is not known at this point whether jurors will be able to see a copy of the book during the trial.

The employee will testify that this copy matches her recollection of the bound and sewn typed book that contains contact information for Maxwell’s family members and alleged victims in this case, according to court documents.

Judge Nathan said at the final preliminary hearing that she would hear testimony from the anonymous employee on the book before deciding whether jurors can see it.

Prosecutors said the book was owned by Maxwell and that copies of it and another owned by Epstein were placed around Epstein’s home for convenience, according to a home manual obtained via a Search warrant.

Expert witnesses to testify on grooming for sexual abuse

Prosecutors allege Maxwell used to prepare Epstein’s victims, put them at ease by taking them on outings like shopping and watching movies, and interviewing them about their personal lives.

Child sexual abuse expert Dr Lisa Rocchio is expected to testify for the charge over preparing minors for sexual abuse, a concept central to the government’s case for the charges against Maxwell in the act of charge.

Judge Nathan ruled that the defense can also call expert witnesses to fight against the expected testimony of the prosecution expert.

Dr Park Dietz should play down grooming in his defense testimony, saying grooming can simply be kind behavior that doesn’t necessarily have to be associated with sexual abuse, according to a defense motion.

Dr Elizabeth Loftus is also expected to testify for the defense about memory distortion and the tendency of victims to remember essential information but forget or memorize peripheral details around a traumatic event, according to a defense motion.

Loftus was also paid to testify on the matter in Harvey Weinstein’s defense in the 2020 trial which ended in a conviction of the disgraced movie mogul for sexual misconduct.

Maxwell faces two additional perjury charges related to allegations that she lied during a civil deposition in 2016, which are expected to be dealt with in a separate trial.
