No one swallows the blame game on Elizabeth Warren’s turkey price

Thanksgiving is in our rearview mirror, but the rising inflation that has driven dinner costs up this year continues. There are a number of reasons why prices are rising fast, from groceries to the gas station.

Now Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren wants us to swallow the excuse that the price hike by turkey farmers is the reason your bird cost more this year. Sorry, senator, but no one swallows it.

The story

Just before Thanksgiving, Warren sent a letter to the Department of Justice demanding an investigation into the price increases for poultry businesses ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday:

Given the apparent link between rising poultry prices for consumers and the history of anti-competitive practices in the poultry industry, I ask you to initiate a broad investigation into the impact of pricing, wage fixing and consolidation in the poultry industry on consumers and farmers.

Turkey’s prices go up 2-24% depending on the measure you use, but so are prices throughout the economy.

As we reported, in October, food prices rose 5.3 percent from the same period last year, with large double-digit price increases for meat, poultry, fish and eggs. Turkeys alone aren’t the only items Americans spend more money on. Will Warren send the DOJ to every food producer in the country to investigate their price increases? And for what purpose?

It really is a distraction and a misguided, weak attempt to pretend to do something about inflation.

What drives inflation?

A poultry farmer recently explained all of the growing costs he faces that are fueling turkey prices.

Rising fuel costs, rising input prices, supply chain disruptions and labor shortages, as well as massive federal spending that rewards workers who stay on the sidelines are pushing up the costs.

These are truths Warren would rather not acknowledge or address, either because she has no idea how to address them, or because it would be an admission that Washington is sending the nation down the wrong path.

As the Wall Street Journal editorial board wrote:

You know Democrats are desperate when they have to invent another example of trade collusion for soaring meat prices. We’re supposed to imagine the fat, happy Big Poultry executives sitting around a table, or maybe on a Zoom call, saying here’s the plan: year that’s going to really piss them off. Good idea. Yeah, let’s do it.

Ms Warren may have taught law at Harvard, but she apparently thinks Americans are stupid.

Americans aren’t stupid, which is why a plurality of voters say the multibillion-dollar tax and spending bill will only make inflation worse, not better. Perhaps the senator should turn her attention to the policies she voted for and how they backfire on American families.
