Melbourne Storm hooker Brandon Smith released a lengthy statement in response to recent criticism, after a swear-laden interview grabbed the headlines in recent days.

The 25-year-old was a guest on The Ice Project with former Kiwi playmaker Isaac John, where he looked into his ongoing contract negotiations.

Smith is out of contract at the end of 2022 and has met with rival clubs in recent weeks for 2023 and beyond, and has revealed a positive outlook for his talks with the Sydney Roosters.

He is now expected to put pen to paper with the Roosters in the coming days, but it was some of his comments regarding his likely destination that sparked some dissatisfaction.

Smith spoke of “wanting to win a prime ministerial post” in the Roosters jersey, despite a year to complete his contract in Melbourne, which saw him labeled as “disrespectful”.

In a lengthy Instagram statement on Tuesday morning, Smith apologized for any prejudice caused by his comments, but also maintained his transparency as his contract saga continues.

“I want to address the current media speculation around me right now, and in particular my recent comments on the YKTR Sports podcast,” he said.

“Over the past two months, I read several headlines about myself day in and day out, many of which were fake, and none came straight out of my mouth.

“I made this podcast for that same reason. To be completely transparent about the process that I went through. Honestly, it’s been very exciting all along and I’m really grateful to be in the position I’m in. .

“One thing I’m proud of is being myself, and whatever the backlash I will continue to do. That being said, I want to acknowledge and apologize for the way some comments Especially at the Melbourne Storm, I never intended to disrespect or appear ungrateful to the club which has done so much for me and my family.

“This goes for all coaches, staff and especially my teammates. I speak from the heart – for better or for worse sometimes – and I’m sorry if anyone has been hurt by my words, but in the end , they are my words. “

Smith has met with several clubs, including the Titans and Dolphins, but admitted on the podcast that his decision is made and he looks set to move to Bondi.

The interview was also criticized for the amount of profanity – however, the podcast contains an “explicit” warning and is no worse than the Wests Tigers documentary which aired earlier this year.

Smith said he will stay true to himself and also shut down comments about Storm’s culture that were taken out of context.

“I specifically want to address the media by refining my comments on the Storm culture, and that being billed as a ‘drink culture’ that they have going on there,” he said.

“Our culture is built on hard work and effort as top priorities. These comments have been taken out of context, and I implore anyone interested in the matter to please watch the interview in its entirety before drawing any conclusions. the last time I touched on the comments made on this podcast. My attention is now turned to the future with the Melbourne Storm and all the incredible opportunities that lie ahead.

“Whatever happens I’ll give 100% that’s all I know. If I have to label a terrible person so be it, if I swear too much I’m sorry but it’s me and I will continue to be me.

“Forever grateful, Cheese. “
