Q: Comparing gas prices in the US to those in Europe and suggesting that we should be happy is wrong. The most appropriate comparison is before and after the election of Joe Biden.
You might not like Donald Trump, but surely you liked gas prices during his administration. He pushed the United States towards energy independence, a scenario in which our energy prices were isolated from the rest of the world.
President Biden has cut oil production in the United States, shut down the Canadian pipeline, and instituted other measures to restrict fossil fuel production here.
Then he asks OPEC to produce more. How does this movement reduce greenhouse gases? It is not.
We have lost our energy independence, which makes the United States more vulnerable to supply and demand elsewhere in the world.
Chuck DeVita, Hollister
A: A president gets too much credit for low gas prices, and too much blame when they go up.
We started to achieve energy independence under President Obama, and it increased as people started to drive much less during the pandemic. Prices are down slightly and are expected to drop over the next few weeks.
The cancellation of the pipeline has no impact on current prices as no oil had been produced and would not have been for several years.
Prices were high when George W. Bush was president, and neither was he to blame.
Q: Can we talk about license plates again, and this time not where they are, but what’s on them?
I’ve noticed more and more California license plates that don’t have the usual pattern: number / 3 letters / 3 digits. Instead, their model is: letter / 3 digits / letter / number. These plaques all have the retro yellow on black design.
Has the DMV started using a new numbering scheme for license plates? Or is there something else with these plates?
Ross Finlayson, mountain view
A: This is not a new pattern. These license plates are the California Legacy special plates from the 1960s. Owners can order special interest plates and a portion of their fees goes to the charity or associated cause. The 1960s California Legacy Plates support the Environmental License Plate Fund, which benefits environmental projects.
A different model was developed to distinguish these plates from ordinary license plates. Processing of specialized license plates currently takes 6 months or more.
Q: While traveling on Interstate 5 out of Sacramento, we noticed that road improvements had been completed but the speed limit was still posted at 55 due to the construction zone. We were in the slow lane at 59mph as everyone, even the big gear, passed us at 65-75 + mph. It’s been like this for some time now. When will Caltrans lower the speed limit to 65 mph?
Brad Thomson, Oakley
A: It will happen soon.
