Hammers boss David Moyes said some West Ham players were partly to blame for Tomas Soucek’s decline in form, but backed him to get good.
If a player deserves to be above the critics at West Ham, it’s Soucek.
Hammers fans – and reporters – have therefore cautiously sidestepped the uncomfortable fact that West Ham’s great Czech midfielder has fallen below his usual high standards this season.
Earlier this season, Moyes admitted that Soucek’s game was suffering from his change of tactics to allow midfielder partner Declan Rice to go further.

Some fans blamed it on fatigue. It’s not just the fact that the goals dried up, Soucek looked like a fish out of water at times.
But there’s more to the unease than fatigue or the changes in West Ham’s approach and form.
And Moyes has now admitted it when asked about Soucek at his last press conference.

Moyes did not name any names, but the Scot made it clear that some West Ham players were also partly to blame for the 26-year-old’s downfall due to lack of quality delivery.
“Yeah I want more of him but he had two narrowly ruled out for offside with two VAR decisions, rebounded off the goalie and he scored and they were ruled out so I think they were. very tight calls, ”Moyes said. the press ahead of the Brighton game when asked about Soucek.
“He had a header a few weeks ago I thought he should have scored and he didn’t but for the moment Dec is stepping up the goal which helped us and gave us a bit of cover .

“But I think at the end of the season he will still have achieved his goal, we will still have goals from Tom at the end of the season and I think that will settle down a bit more.
“Our game has also changed slightly. You know, we were a little harder to go through and build and Tom was involved in that rather than just boxing in every now and then and getting to the bottom of it. So we must try to take advantage of both.
“We have to try to involve him in the preparation, but also try to bring him to the end of the crosses, which is not always the case. My message was this: I’m not sure if our in-box deliveries haven’t been as good as they should be from larger areas. I am looking for a better quality in the crosses. To choose the people in the box.

“I don’t disagree (that he looks tired), you know he maybe just a little down a notch, but he’s a boy who played Euro or plays all matches for the Czech Republic.
“He plays every game for us, we put him down when we can and he’s a boy that I told you came in, the two Czech boys came in with incredible appetites, energy and excitement. I saw pieces of Tom where he was just a little heavy in pieces of his room. But overall he is such an asset to us.
“The work he does, the ground he covers around the pitch, it’s amazing what he does, really. And a lot of it goes unnoticed. But what has been noticed are his goals and I can see the reason he is chosen. “

Soucek is a good defensive midfielder. But his natural game is to be a box-to-box man.
He picks up the ball, feeds it wide or forward and then continues his runs – often perfectly synchronized – to get up and support the attacks.
He was West Ham’s Hammer of the Year last season for a reason. He was the most important and influential player on the team.
As a fan, if you couldn’t see it for yourself, the stats were there to prove it.
He set a new high-flying record for aerial duels won, a new high-flying record for distance flown.

Soucek stopped God knows how many goals with heads and defensive blocks, scored 10 Premier League goals and provided an assist.
Soucek was in the Premier League’s top 10 statistically last season. Only Dimitri Payet, Scott Parker and Paolo Di Canio have achieved this in West Ham Premier League history.
The Czech mountain man has looked like a threat in every set piece and in almost every attack last season.
This season, Soucek looks neutered.
Moyes was honest in his analysis of reason. Hopefully the Scots and Soucek can work with the rest of the West Ham squad to fix it.
