Benue State All Progressive Congress (APC) expressed dismay at recent attacks by Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom on Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs Senator George Akume , stating that the attacks were just a plot to tarnish and work against Akume’s chances of emerging as CPA president.

The party also accused Ortom of writing a bogus bribery petition to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) against Akume to cover up his failure to provide development leadership for the state.

APC State President Augustine Agada at a briefing to reporters yesterday said that the attacks on “our leader have been constantly being prepared over time and have flared up on him intermittently with a great evil. But while we may have tolerated this bashing for so long, the governor has once again embarked on a dangerous campaign of slander, desperately trying to disparage the imposing profile of Senator Akume, who is one of the few former governors. Nigerians without a criminal record.

“The aim of this slander campaign, we know in the end, is to demean Senator Dr George Akume who is highly regarded by many Nigerians in the public eye, thus weakening his chances of emerging as president. APC national, now that the majority of APC members in all states of the federation are calling for his emergence in this post.

He said the fraud allegation currently being made against Akume by Ortom and his administration is clearly an act of political witch-hunting.

“Why bring up a random investigative report into the Akume administration for many years now, the same government had brought a 107 billion naira allegation against the administration of Gabriel Suswams, but then quashed it; Will the same government not overturn tomorrow on these frivolous reports which seek to indict Senator Akume today? “

He said the allegation was another diversionary tactic of raising baseless allegations and excuses, whenever money comes into the state.

He recalled that on the day it was confirmed that the federal government had made available another tranche of over N18 billion in bailouts to Benue State, Ortom became strangely more talkative and hostile, not only towards his benefactor, Senator Akume, but also to the civil society of Benue. servants and pensioners whom he refused to pay their salaries and pensions; internally displaced people he described as thieves stealing his cassava from the farm and now, grossly referring to all Benue as drunkards.

In response to the APC’s statement, the Benue State branch of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said it had observed the views expressed by the APC against Governor Samuel Ortom and his administration, including the matter of the audit report which recently uncovered cases of serious financial crimes against George Akume during his tenure as governor of Benue State from 1999 to 2007.

According to PDP spokesperson Mr. Bemgba Iortyom, it is Benue PDP’s position that Akume should do the honorable necessary by availing himself of responding to these financial crimes cases if brought to light against him by the audit rather than resorting to press sponsorship. conferences of a neophyte whose status remains unclear even within his party, the APC.
