The White House has reacted strongly to criticism from China and Russia over the “Summit for Democracy”, which the United States will host next week.
President Joe Biden invited the leaders of around 110 countries and territories to the online meeting Thursday and Friday. China and Russia, who were not invited, criticized the summit as inciting division.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Thursday that the summit’s aim was to discuss ways to work together to protect and defend democracy around the world. She said: “This is nothing we are going to apologize for, regardless of the criticism from any country in the world.”
Psaki also said that no democracy is perfect and stressed the need to continue to encourage positive change. She said the United States hopes attendees feel the summit is an opportunity to be part of this positive change moving forward.
Biden apparently aims to strengthen ties with allies and friendly countries to counter China and Russia, which the United States sees as autocracies.
