Opinion: COVID-19 tops the blame game

Recently, a shootout on a movie set in New Mexico was described as an accidental gunshot. The story stated that a well-known actor was involved and the actor was practicing a type of quick draw on set when the following happened (I’m paraphrasing): The actor drew the pistol twice.

The first time, nothing happened. As he drew the pistol a second time, the gunshot exploded.

The gun did it.

A Milwaukee newspaper headline recently read: “One person plowed his SUV through the Waukesha Christmas Parade, killing five and injuring over 40.

While the headline notes that the vehicle had a driver, the story indicates that, according to Police Chief Dan Thompson, a red SUV went through the parade gates and down Main Street. After the vehicle struck more than 20 people, a suspicious vehicle was found and a “person of interest” was in custody.

Note that the vehicle begins to become an entity. The red SUV broke, the suspect vehicle was recovered and so on. It culminated with “an officer discharging his gun at the suspect vehicle in an attempt to stop the vehicle”.

The vehicle did.

But the all-time winner in the blame-sharing game comes down to the COVID-19 “drumbeat”.

Can’t find the Christmas present you really wanted? There is a problem in the supply chain because of COVID. Are the prices of gasoline and bacon going up? COVID again. Seventy ships in the port of San Pedro? Longshoremen and drivers cannot be found to unload them because, you are right, of COVID.

A Sunday editorial I read had the following line: “When the pandemic closed schools, parents rallied with teachers. COVID has closed schools.

Additionally, according to media reports, the pandemic has shut down restaurants, bars, retail stores and churches to name a few. Governors, school boards, education secretaries, public health officials and other members of government had nothing to do with the collapse of the economy or the loss of two years of school for kids.

COVID has done it.

And it’s still not going to stop. Public health officials have sounded the alarm bells about a new variant, Omicron, which has the potential to fuel a global wave of COVID-19 cases. (All variations are named after Greek letters.)

There are currently five disturbing variations and two interesting variations. Three old variants of interest are now classified as watched variants and three variants are now formerly watched variants. Hope that clears it up. Maybe when they run out of Greek letters, we’ll be on top of COVID-19.
