Strictly’s John Whaite “Expected More Criticism” of the Show’s First All-Male Couple | Come dance strictly

John Whaite of Strictly Come Dancing – who made history as a member of the show’s first all-male couple – said he initially intended to dance with a straight partner and expected a lot more criticism and disapproval he received.

Former Great British Bake Off winner and professional dance partner Johannes Radebe followed in the footsteps of Olympians Nicola Adams and Katya Jones, who formed the show’s first all-female couple last year before due withdraw due to Covid-19.

But initially, Whaite told the BBC team he thought he should dance with a straight male partner, “just to make a statement that isn’t about sexuality,” he said in an interview with Radio Times.

“But as I was announced, I saw that people were very pro male-male coupling. I realized that was a big thing for the gay community. When we were on the dance floor, I just want to be elected according to our dance. But to deny that our partnership is meaningful would be a very bad thing. “

The TV chief said he anticipated the troll and the hate mail. “But actually, it’s not bad at all. It has been kind and generous. The number of people we have texted saying, “I am proud as a straight mom and straight dad to have children growing up in a world where two men can dance together” has been truly overwhelming. “

He and Radebe said they compared notes about their experiences growing up, including feelings of shame about their sexuality. Now Radebe’s mother (his father died when the dancer was 14) is gathering her neighbors in South Africa to watch Strictly Together. “It’s a big party. They are very proud, ”said the dancer.

But the couple were aware that not everyone is a fan. In 2019, the show received 189 complaints after its first-ever single-sex routine was “offensively” aired, and this year, there are still negative comments on social media.

“On Twitter this week, someone said his grandmother had to leave the room when we walked on the stage. She won’t watch us, ”Whaite said. “I think it’s a fear thing. Seeing a world where two men can dance together can instill awe of God in people. But let’s leave them behind.

He added that he hoped straight people would start dancing same-sex couples to send “a very clear message of inclusion.”

While not concerned about the Strictly Curse (where dance partners begin romantic relationships), Whaite said he understands the feeling after performing the rumba. “I felt like I loved Johannes. And I love it all the way… you can see why people are logging on, ”he said.
