Troy Parrott criticism after red card as Tottenham winger returns to club

Tottenham’s group of young players on loan have shrunk after one of them returned to the club this month.

The North London squad had seven players on loan across Great Britain and the Continent, but that number fell by one with the return of J’Neil Bennett.

The 19-year-old winger suffered ankle ligament damage while on loan to Crewe Alexandra, who is expected to keep him for up to 12 weeks.

As the teenager was only on loan until January, his loan spell ended prematurely as he returned to Hotspur Way to begin treatment and recovery.

Here’s how his other six Spurs teammates on loan fared this week:

Pope Matar Sarr (Metz)

Tottenham’s summer signing Sarr continued his routine of starting then bench and then starting in Metz.

The 19-year-old played 80 minutes in an attacking midfielder role in the 3-1 home loss to Montpellier midweek before leaving the bench at halftime in the 4-0 loss to Monaco Sunday.

Sarr has now racked up 17 Ligue 1 games so far this campaign for his side ahead of next summer’s move to north London.

It’s been a tough season for Metz and the versatile young midfielder will have learned a lot about a relegation battle as he prepares for his move to England.

Troy Parrott (MK Dons)

Troy Parrott saw red in the week after meeting Theo Archibald in MK Dons’ penalty shootout win over Leyton Orient in the second round of the EFL Trophy.

The 19-year-old Irishman was given a red card for bending his head over after a provocation and that meant he had missed the shootout and his manager was not happy.

MK Dons boss Liam Manning said: “It was a lack of discipline. Their boy put up his hand but you have to say ‘So what? “and not to retaliate like he did. It was just a lack of discipline for me.

Fortunately for Parrott, the red cards of the EFL Trophy only result in a suspension in this competition.

The young Spurs forward has four goals and four assists in 18 appearances this season.

Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic)

Carter-Vickers received praise for his latest performance for Celtic as the Scottish giants won 3-0 at Dundee United.

The 23-year-old got an assist during the game and got a seven in football scotland’s scores.

They wrote: “A center-back with real ability on the ball. He read the game well, not really breaking a sweat. The loaned Tottenham player was a good signing for Celtic.”

The defender is enjoying a very good loan spell away from Tottenham after joining Celtic on the transfer deadline day.

Making 19 appearances for the Glasgow side so far, the Spurs defender is making great strides north of the border.

Kion Etete (Northampton Town)

Kion Etete splits his time between Northampton and Hotspur Way as he receives treatment for a hamstring injury.

The 20-year-old has found his goalscoring shoes for the Ligue 2 team in recent weeks and has become a key player for the second-place team.

Manager Jon Brady said: “His production has been fantastic and his performances have been solid and they have been on a constant upward curve.

“We noticed that outing even more and he’s been on an upward curve so he’s giving us all he’s got.

“He’s been such a key player for us and we were looking for when we could put him down but it’s tough when you have a top player because you want to play your best players and he’s been great for us.”

Northampton did not play this weekend but traveled to third-placed Exeter City on Tuesday. Etete, who has six goals and two assists for his loan club, is looking to recover and get back on the goal track.

Jamie Bowden (Oldham Athletic)

Jamie Bowden recently started every game for Oldham in Ligue 2 but only played nine minutes off the bench as Oldham looked to keep their 1-0 scoreline at Sunderland in the EFL Trophy second round.

The 20-year-old will likely be back in the starting lineup on Tuesday night as host to Oldham Tranmere.

While Oldham has had a rough season, Bowden has plenty of playing time and has played 20 games for the Latics.
