LOS ANGELES – Two of Gervonta Davis’ coaches resented the fact that reporters dared to describe his victory over Isaac Cruz on Sunday as “close” even though it was, well, close.
Floyd Mayweather, his promoter, questioned the competence of the judges – who noted it 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 in Davis’s favor – then questioned boxing writers, who he said , know nothing about sport.
Davis (26-0, 24 KOs) had stopped his previous 16 opponents.
“Fight judges are 75, 80, when it’s time to hang them up, hang them up,” he said at the post-fight press conference. “I am not biased. If ‘Tank’ got his ass fucked, I’d say… he got his ass fucked. Easy fight, from what I’ve seen.
“[Cruz] got out… four laps he could have… but for eight laps he got kicked out.
The Hall of Famer continued, “I’ve been in this position before, fighting guys like that. If a guy throws a few good shots, a guy can win a few tricks. So it’s no different from [my] Fight of Marcos Maidana. If a guy wins three, four rounds, you say he won the fight.
“They expected Tank to knock this guy out tonight. Since he didn’t knock this guy out, they’ll say he lost. This is how it works.
At this point, Davis asked a reporter if he thought Cruz had given him “hard times”. The reporter replied, “Yes. Then Mayweather stepped in again.
“Most of the time you have to teach boxing to these so called boxing specialists, boxing journalists. They really don’t know. As Roger Mayweather put it, rest in peace: “They don’t know anything about boxing.”
“We are not saying that [Cruz] was not aggressive. He threw a few good punches to the body, a few good punches to the head in the fight. It comes with the territory. You can’t be the one to throw all the punches. So it wouldn’t be a fair fight.
Then Calvin Ford, Davis’ coach, expressed his frustration.
“Let me explain something to all of you,” he said. “[Davis’] the hand was injured in the camp. He never complained about it. He came here and put on a hell of a show. It is essential. He fought this kid with one hand. He came around the corner on round six and said his hand hurt. … I said, ‘I don’t want to hear this.’ I said, “Fight through this.” And he did.
The story continues
“You all have to give this young man his accessories. “
Davis said he injured his hand in the sixth round but, to his credit, he didn’t want to dwell on it.
“I wasn’t comfortable fighting a smaller fighter,” he said. “The only thing was when I threw my punches I hit him on the top of the head. This is why my hand was hurting so much. I think that’s why I didn’t have a knockout.
“… I don’t want to put it on my hand.” I did what I did. It’s about boxing. I knew that entering this fight [that I had to] forget the hand. I did the right thing. “
