Governor Kate Brown ignites on social media after being spotted without a mask at an event in Washington, DC, while maintaining her controversial indoor mask tenure at home.
Brown was in the nation’s capital on Saturday for the 30th anniversary gala of the Victory Fund, a national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ candidates for public office. Brown, a bisexual and the first openly LGBTQ governor, was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame at the event.
Several photographs of Brown posing for photos and speaking with other unmasked attendees have circulated on Twitter, and many commentators, including Republicans in the Oregon Senate, have pointed to the apparent hypocrisy of maintaining a mandate. indoor mask across the state when she chose not to wear a mask herself at a large indoor DC event
“The same rules that apply in Washington DC should apply here in Oregon,” said one of several tweets from Republicans in the Senate, who have consistently criticized the governor’s hiding policies.
“Apparently COVID-19 only exists in schools and offices in Oregon and not in ballrooms in Washington, DC during posh fundraisers,” said the Senate Minority Leader of the Oregon, Tim Knopp, R-Bend, in an email Monday.
The Oregon Senate GOP’s reaction to Maskless Governor Kate Brown at a gala in Washington, DC on Saturday.
Chris Pair, Brown’s political adviser, said in an email that all attendees must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and that there is no indoor mask warrant in the capital. The mayor of DC ended the indoor masking requirement on November 22.
“Regardless of local rules, Governor Brown went further and remained in mask during the event, except when giving her acceptance speech, eating or taking photos with attendees,” Peer wrote in an e- mail.
At least one photo showed Brown in the background, seated at a table and conversing without a mask with another participant seated at a nearby table.
Pair insisted the photo clearly showed Brown “sitting at her table where she had eaten and drunk.”
Oregon is one of six states that require people to wear masks indoors in public spaces, regardless of their immunization status. Last month, Brown lifted the state’s mandate on outdoor masks.
